I don’t know if I want to use Google Voice now that I have an invite

So I finally, finally got an invite to join the beta for Google Voice (thanks again Iris!) and now that I have it, I don’t know if I want to use it.

Google voice is a new service that looks to change the way we use our phones all together. GVoice isn’t the next step in mobile service or anything, it’s just something that compliments your mobile life by tying together all your phone numbers under one, unifying Google number. You can designate which numbers ring depending on who calls, get your voicemails transcribed, and get cheap international calls to boot. Here are some videos cause I hate to type all this out:

Here is Google Voice if you opt not to use a Google number:

And here is Google Voice if you choose to surrender yourself fully to the will of Google:

So, yeah. I think it’s cool, but I am not too keen on getting a whole new number to give to people. There really isn’t a Google Voice app for my iPhone or anything…so why bother?

I was excited at first too, but without an easily accessible app to place and receive calls/texts like Android, it doesn’t have a chance. Apple dropped the ball on that one.

Personally, I think Google should turn their Google app for iPhone into a do it all app. GVoice, Gchat, Gmaps/Latitude, Picasa, Reader, Docs (I’d KILL for a GDocs app on iPhone), Translations, Books, Blogger, etc etc etc, all the goodies they offer. As it is, I opened the open when I first downloaded it and never since.

What would be the point of doing that if Apple is just going to reject the app anyway?

That’s some great optimism there, Mr. Siu. I don’t think Apple can keep blackballing large companies without a severe backlash from developers. Especially now that many don’t see the app store as the land of milk and profits. Plus, I want my Google goodies, damnit. Especially with how delicious Eclair looks, or the SE Rachel, mmmm.
